André Heimgartner and Chelsea Herbert claim wins in BNT V8s

Though the weather at Mike Pero Motorsport Park has dried up, the opening race of the BNT V8s weekend was still packed with chaos. André Heimgartner eventually won the race in Class One, while in Class Two Chelsea Herbert took her second win of the season.

Having started from pole, Heimgartner made a mistake by himself on lap one. This shuffled him to fourth place and handed the lead to Jason Bargwanna, Nick Ross, and Jack Smith.

The race then took another turn, when Ross was spun around by Smith at 'Pot Hole'. The move was frowned on by race control, who handed Smith a pit-lane penalty for the contact.

Before Smith could take the penalty, a safety car period  (caused by the beached Commodore of Matt Tubbs) compressed the field. This allowed Heimgartner to close right in on Smith and Bargwanna in the race for the win.

With Smith sitting his penalty after the race restart on lap eight of 12, it left Heimgartner to heap pressure onto his Toyota Camry teammate Bargwanna.

The pairing raced closely for a number of laps, before Heimgartner was able to ultimately make the move after he and the former Bahurst 1000 champion made minor contact through turn one.

This handed Heimgartner the lead, and a few minutes later the win by 1.8 seconds. Ross recovered to finish third, in front of Lance Hughes.

In Class Two recent winner Herbert made the most of the opening laps to take the lead from polesitter Liam MacDonald. From there she simply controled the pace; ultimately winning by 1.6 seconds. As an added bonus, she finished fifth overall.

MacDonald, Justin Ashwell, and Brock Timperley completed the Class Two top five.
