Nick Cassidy confirms he will defend his SUPER GT title in 2018

Nick Cassidy has announced his motorsport schedule for 2018, confirming that he will try to defend his stunning 2017 Autobacs SUPER GT championship win.

The Lexus and Toyota-backed driver will once again partner with Ryo Hirakawa in a TOM'S Racing Lexus LC 500 GT500 machine.

He will also reunite with Kondo Racing for a second tilt at the SUPER FORMULA series — Asia's premier open-wheel championship.

Cassidy's SUPER GT campaign began with victory at the opening round at Okayama. A podium at Fuji immediately followed, with consistency throughout the rest of the season putting him in good stead for the last two rounds.

Two races at Chang International Circuit and Twin Ring Motegi followed, with Cassidy and Hirakawa ultimately finishing first and then second at to claim the title by a mere two points.

In SUPER FORMULA meanwhile, Cassidy endured an up and down debut punctuated by a podium in only his second race, and pole position at Sportsland SUGO. He finished 10th in the points standings, while Hiroaki Ishiura, Brendon Hartley's Scuderia Toro Rosso teammate Pierre Gasly, and Felix Rosenqvist locked out the top three championship positions.

Both categories are enjoying a growth in interest from Europe. SUPER GT in particular is on the rise, thanks to a strong relationship with the DTM, as well as the off-season signing of former Formula 1 world champion Jenson Button. He will line up in a Honda NSX-GT with Japan's Naoki Yamamoto.

Both calendars begin in April; SUPER GT first up on the 7–8th at Okayama International Circuit, with SUPER FORMULA following on April 22.
