Blomqvist's DTM consistency continues with top-six at Spielberg finale

Tom Blomqvist's consistent run in the 2016 DTM series has continued overnight at Spielberg in Austria with a sixth-place finish, backing up the podium he earned in race one.

Starting the race from eighth on the grid, Blomqvist was in seventh by turn two on the opening lap, only to be shuffled back to ninth later on.

As the race continued, a multi-car battle between Eduardo Mortara, Felix da Costa, Augusto Farfus, and Maxime Martin eventuated just in front of Blomqvist. After a tense few laps, the battle boiled over with contact between da Costa and Mortara — the pair coming together at Rauch and sending each other into the gravel. While da Costa was able to drive away, Mortara had become beached.

Blomqvist was one of several who benefited from the incident, jumping back up to seventh in the order. He would eventually take over sixth, after passing Saturday race winner and BMW counterpart Marco Wittman during the final cycles of pit stops.

While Audi's Jamie Green scored pole position, and Mattias Ekstrom looked threatening in the closing stint of the race, BMW still took the win — this time with former Formula 1 driver Timo Glock. He headed home the lightning Ekstrom, who had the benefit of fresher tyres at the chequered flag. Green rounded out the podium.

Despite a poor weekend for Mercedes-Benz, they still lead the championship with Pail di Resta. Mortara, Glock, Martin, and Wittman are the top five, while Blomqvist's latest result helps consolidate his standing in sixth.
