BNT V8s abandon final race due to adverse conditions

Rain brought Race 3 of the BNT V8s at Pukekohe Park to a premature end, meaning there were no winners for Sunday’s finale.

In what was a dry start to the race, second-row starter Brad Lathrope got the jump on both André Heimgartner and Alexandra Whitley.

Lathrope led briefly but was soon passed by Heimgartner for the lead of the race, which was scheduled to go for 16 laps. Whitley was still third with Nick Ross in tow, however, he soon found a way through on Lap 2.

It wasn’t long before rain began to fall. No sooner had the race started and it was brought to a stand still. Heimgartner had the lead as the Safety Car was deployed, though Ross had found his way past Lathrope.

The race was eventually Red Flagged with Heimgartner in front. Ross was second and Lathrope third while Whitley had fallen to fourth.

After a lengthy delay to change tyres the field filed out of the pit lane. However, since they had pitted, the rain got a lot heavier and meant the circuit was well and truly wet.

Not long after that the race was declared. The cars were sent out for a lap and returned to the pit lane to bring the cars back into their respective garages.

Heimgartner was first, but there was to be no winner as the race didn’t meet the minimum race distance.

With just two races completed, Heimgartner was the Round 1 winner. Whitley was second while Lathrope was third.

Justin McIlroy was the BNT V8 Lites round winner. Several others had to go home early with mechanical dramas. BNT V8s Open was dominated by Sam Collins in the Roush Fenway Racing NASCAR-powered Ford Mustang.
