Australian V8 champion joins BNT V8 grid for ITM Auckland SuperSprint

Dunlop Super2 Series and Kumho V8 Touring Car Championship regular Jack Smith has been confirmed to join the BNT V8s field for this weekend's 2017–’18 series opener at the ITM Auckland SuperSprint.

Smith will drive the second of Hamilton Motorsports' class one Holden VE Commodore TLXs — a car formerly driven by Tom Alexander [pictured below].

“It’s going to be all new to me, I’ve actually never raced in New Zealand, so I won’t know any of the tracks at all,” Smith said.

“I’ve seen lots of coverage of Pukekohe on television over the years, and it looks like a very fast circuit, I’m looking forward to getting there later in the week.”

The confirmation comes following a breakthrough title win for the 18-year-old, having won the 2017 Kumho V8 Touring Car Championship title (a series for older pre-COTF specification Supercars) last weekend at Sydney Motorsport Park.

His racing career also includes stints in the CAMS Jayco Formula 4 Championship and experience driving a MARC Cars V8.

With another series in Super2 (where he races for Brad Jones Racing) planned for next year, Smith sees the Kiwi championship as a means of building experience behind the wheel.

“The aim of coming to New Zealand and doing the BNT V8s series is to gain further mileage in a car that is similar to a Supercar.

“Essentially most of the championship is run in the Australian off season, so when the new season kicks of in Australia in March I will have done a lot of driving over summer and will be race ready.

“I’ll have an experienced team mate in Lance Hughes, he went well at Pukekohe last year, so I’ll be able to gain some knowledge from him over the weekend.”
