Taylor Cockerton gets Audi R8 LMS Cup evaluation test in Malaysia

Taylor Cockerton will make the next big step in his motor racing career when he heads to Malaysia for an evaluation test in the Audi R8 LMS Cup.

Having won the 2017 edition of Formula Masters in Asia, Cockerton earned the opportunity to test a GT3-specification Audi R8 at the Sepang International Circuit on January 16. He'll have just one day to get to know the GT3 race car in hopes it'll open up other opportunities in Asia.

Cockerton will test with South East Asia-based team KCMG, who have competed all across the world but base themselves in Asia.

"I’m really excited, it should be a fantastic experience," Cockerton said.

"The test will be an evaluation drive to see where I am at compared with their current drivers. The biggest challenge for me is that I haven’t driven one of these before.

"The advantage I have is I know the Sepang circuit well, having raced there twice last season."

While the GT3 drive is at the forefront of his focus, Cockerton is still hoping to put together a last-minute deal to drive in this year's Castrol Toyota Racing Series.

Cockerton would become the fifth Kiwi on the grid alongside Marcus Armstrong, Brendon Leitch as well as debutants Ryan Yardley and Reid Harker.

"For me it is unfinished business. From a personal perspective I feel I haven’t achieved enough in TRS.

"I had a win but had it taken away after being penalised for jumping the start. I want to prove to critics that I have the talent to compete with some of the world’s best young drivers."

"I’m confident we can put a deal together to race in TRS. That would be the best outcome. At this point I am focusing on the Audi test and the options it could bring for 2018."

Even if he doesn't get a drive in the series, Cockerton will be on the sidelines helping MTEC Motorsport as the number two mechanic.
