Driver hospitalized after serious Formula 1600 crash in Christchurch

A large crash has prematurely ended the day's racing at Mike Pero Motorsport Park; the venue for the opening round of the Castrol Toyota Racing Series. 


Taking place in the Formula 1600 Series, the crash occured after the grid crossed the finish line after the final lap. The crash resulted in the rest of the day's racing being scratched, and one driver being hospitalised. 


It is understood that the driver is conscious and moving.


“There was an accident at the end of the Formula 1600 race,” said MotorSport New Zealand CEO Brian Budd.


“The driver has been hospitalised and we understand his condition is Status 2. He is awake and talking. The cause of the accident at this stage is unknown but is being investigated.”
