Toyota Supra revealed after 10 years of teasing

It's finally happened, the day many have been waiting for. After more than a decade of teasing, Toyota has pulled the covers off the new 2020 Supra.

 

First off, the design. Most of the new Supra’s looks have been pulled from the 2016 FT-1 concept, and it looks pretty darn good.

 

The headlights, carbon fibre splitter and double-bubble roof carry over largely unaltered but the production car loses the elongated FT-1 nosepiece. Instead, it gets an extra grille directly below the Toyota emblem. At the rear are slim taillights, a ducktail spoiler and a low-mounted LED brake light, all further FT-1 elements.

 

 

Inside is a bit different, and here is where people will begin to point out foibles, largely relating to the origin of some parts.

The Supra shares commonality with the BMW Z4, and this co-development is most evident in the cabin.

 

The iDrive dial, gear selector and infotainment screen are all BMW fare, although Toyota has built its own digital instrument cluster. And the layout of the cabin is more Toyota than BMW, subtly angled towards the driver.

 

 

However, the biggest BMW donation is the engine. Supra is powered by the same 3.0-litre inline six as in the BMW Z4, albeit disappointingly down on power. Here the engine produces 250kW and 500Nm, against the Z4’s 284kW. Toyota says its sports coupe can hit 100km/h in 4.1 seconds, with a limited top speed of 250km/h. The only transmission will be an eight-speed automatic.

 

For those wanting the Supra badge but are working to a budget, there will be an inline-four version too. Chief engineer Tetsuya Tada has also said previously this is the one to get for those looking to swap a 2JZ for the new car.

 

 

As for price, we’re waiting on Toyota NZ to get back to us. It will launch here later this year, when we’ll get more specific model details.
