Chelsea Herbert set for W Series selection test

BNT V8s regular Chelsea Herbert will become the first female driver from New Zealand to try break into the W Series.

The first series only recently wrapped up with Jamie Chadwick being crowned the inaugural championship winner. Now the series is starting back up again with its selection process in Almeria, Spain next week over 16-18 September.

W Series is a Formula 3-based championship that utilizes the Tatuus T-318 chassis, the same one used by the Castrol Toyota Racing Series, Formula Regional Championship and Formula 3 Asian Championship.

Next week 14 drivers will head to Circuito de Almería for the selection test. Of those just eight will be selected for the remaining seats on the grid. Already there are 12 seats occupied with the top 12 competitors from the first season brought back for season two.

The top 12 drivers of the W Series 2019 championship and who automatically qualify for entry into the 2020 season are: Jamie Chadwick, Beitske Visser, Alice Powell, Marta Garcia, Emma Kimilainen, Fabienne Wohlwend, Miki Koyama, Sarah Moore, Vicky Piria, Tasmin Pepper, Jess Hawkins and Sabre Cook.

Visser and Koyama will be used as the benchmark for the applicants to test themselves against on and off the track.

The confirmed line-up of drivers heading to test at Spain includes some high profile names, including former IndyCar Series driver Katherine Legge and Supercars hopeful Abbie Eaton.

The 2020 W Series will be eligible for FIA Super Licence points. The FIA is currently determining the number of points that will be awarded, and the number of drivers who will receive them.
