Craig Lowndes quickest in final Sandown co-driver practice

Red Bull Holden Racing Team are two up after Friday at the Penrite Oil Sandown 500 with the fastest times in Practice 1 and Practice 3.

It was Garth Tander who was quickest in the morning but Craig Lowndes claimed top honours in the final co-driver practice session. One more session takes place on Saturday morning before Qualifying.

Lowndes clocked a 1:07.8356 in a tightly contested penultimate practice session. Tony D’Alberto of Shell V-Power Racing was second quickest a mere 0.060s adrift Dale Wood was third fastest, 0.099s off the lead for Holden-Ford-Nissan top three.

“We were all hustling at the start to get some laps in,” Lowndes said of the threat of rain.

“We made the car better over the session, no doubt about that. We went up with springs, we went down with springs, we played with shocks.

“We got the balance to where we wanted and we put a set of tyres which Jamie had previously run. It took three laps to get the tyre pressures and balance right, but we were hassling it.”

Tander claimed the fourth-fastest time in the other Red Bull racer while Jack Perkins managed a time good enough for fifth in the leading Walkinshaw Andretti United entry.

Ash Walsh (Brad Jones Racing), Will Brown (Penrite Racing), James Moffat (Tickford Racing), Alex Premat (Shell V-Power Racing) and Thomas Randle (Tickford Racing) completed the top 10 running order.

The session ran without incident. Despite the threat of rain, nothing came.

Practice 4 gets underway at 12:40 pm NZST on Saturday before Qualifying at 2:25 pm NZST. Race 28 of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship takes place at 4:25 pm before Race 29 at 7:20 pm to set the grid for the Sandown 500 on Sunday.
