Dom Storey is set to make his long-awaited racing return this summer with 59Racing at the Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour.
After the team confirmed their Pro line-up earlier this week, the team has announced Storey among their Silver line-up that also features Fraser Ross (Australia) and Martin Kodric (Croatia).
The customer supported entry will see 59Racing field two McLaren 720S GT3 race cars at Mount Panorama across the top two GT3 classes.
It’s been a long time between drinks for Storey who hasn’t raced since 2018 in the Dunlop Super2 Series. Changes to the Australian GT Championship rules meant he sat out the 2019 season after several years alongside Peter Hackett in a Mercedes-AMG GT3.
Storey said he’s looking forward to his return in what will be a class contender and possible outright chance.
“A big thanks to 59Racing for this opportunity, they’re a great team and I think with Fraser and Martin we’ve got a really strong driver line-up,” Storey said.
“It’s the first time the 720 has raced there, and I think it’s a circuit that will suit the car which has shown itself to be a front runner everywhere its raced.
The Bathurst 12 Hour is a tough event, and us drivers will have to do our bit, but I think we have all the ingredients we need to come home with a good result, and I’m looking forward to getting up there.”
Storey, Ross and Kodric make up a formidable line-up. Ross has previous experience in the Australian GT Championship and the Bathurst 12 Hour.
“The Bathurst 12 Hour is a highlight of the motorsport calendar and I can’t wait to get up there with the McLaren 720S GT3,” Ross said.
“The team at 59Racing showed all through last year that they are among the best in the business, and I think with the driving combination we have we’re in with a real shout of a good result.
“Having racing against Dom before I know how good he is, and I’m looking forward to racing alongside him. It’s also great to have Martin joining us and his wealth of experience and pace is going to be a great addition to the team.”
It’ll be the first time Kodric has raced at Mount Panorama. At just 22 years old he has plenty of single-seater and sports car experience.
Kodric comes to Australia off the back of a season in the International GT Open series where he claimed third overall with Teo Martin Motorsport in a McLaren 720S GT3. A year earlier he won GT World Challenge Asia with the FFF Racing Team.
“Bathurst is one of those tracks every driver wants to race on, so I’m delighted to have that opportunity with 59Racing,” he said.
“The McLaren 720S GT3 has proved itself to be a fast and reliable race car, and I’m sure as a team we can deliver a good result. It will be my first experience of racing in Australia, and I can’t wait.”
The Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour takes place on 31 January-2 February.
