D1NZ and Speed Works Events announce landmark calendar collaboration

Mega motorsport weekends are on their way for race fans this season with confirmation the D1NZ National Drifting Championship will be on the bill at three of Speed Works Events meetings.

D1NZ’s high octane superstars of the Pro Series will appear at Teretonga Park in Invercargill, Pukekohe Park in South Auckland and Hampton Downs in the North Waikato during the season.

Confirmation of D1NZ to the Speed Works Events calendar coincides with the announcement D1NZ will contest a five-round calendar.

The season opener will take place at Teretonga Park over 24-25 January before heading to Pukekohe Park over 7-8 February. The series will then headline a night show at Bay Park Arena in Tauranga over 28-29 February before returning to the Speed Works calendar at Hampton Downs over 27-28 March.

The series will culminate with the Grand Final at Pukekohe Park over 8-9 May.

It brings a boost to Speed Works’ already impressive line up, which is set to feature the Castrol Toyota Racing Series, BNT V8s and newly launched TCR New Zealand Series at key events.

Fans can look forward to enjoying the sideways battles of up to 40 top level Pro Series drifters, with Ford, Nissan, Mazda, Toyota and many more major marques among the field.

The new format will see practice and qualifying take place on Friday evening before lighting up Saturday afternoons and evenings with an all action twilight round of the D1NZ National Drifting Championship.

D1NZ Category Manager Brendon White said the three-round deal was the start of something big for Kiwi race fans.

“This is something most motorsport fans will have thought about and wanted to see for a while and it’s great news for both drifting and circuit racing that the two codes are joining up for these three amazing events,” White said.

“There’s a lot that’s new for fans to look forward to this summer and I’m delighted the thrills and spills of our top drifting class will be one of those.”

With BNT V8s, Pirelli Porsche, Formula Ford, GTRNZ, Mazda Racing and a host of other classes scheduled to appear during the summer, the motorsport offering for fans is looking better than ever according to promoter Geoff Short.

“We are always trying to improve the show and we reckon this season is going to be the best yet for fans,” he said.

“The race card is packed with great classes and action that will now literally go from dawn until dusk. There’s some exciting news to come on the TV package for the season too.”
