S5000 scores Australian Grand Prix support card slot

On the eve of the opening round, S5000 organizers have confirmed the series will be on the Australian Grand Prix support card in 2020.

Run by the Australian Racing Group, S5000 will be joined by sister series TCR Australia on the Albert Park Street Circuit.

The two-round series gets underway this weekend at Sandown Raceway and will recommence at The Bend Motorsport Park later this year. A full calendar for the 2020 season hasn't been confirmed yet for S5000.

Superstar signup Rubens Barrichello was on hand for the big reveal in Melbourne today. A two-time Formula 1 World Championship runner-up, Barrichello will be the headliner in what is expected to be a 14-car grid this weekend.

Matthew Brabham was also in attendance for the reveal. He is expected to be a frontrunner this weekend too.

"There is always such a strong appetite from our fans for exciting on-track activity, so having the exciting S5000 class at our event is the perfect fit," Australian Grand Prix Corporation CEO Andrew Westacott said.

"AGPC is always looking to inspire the next generation of drivers and being able to showcase a new Australian motorsport category not just nationally, but globally, is such a fantastic opportunity for all involved."
