Button/Yamamoto pip Cassidy/Hirakawa to SUPER GT title

Nick Cassidy and Ryo Hirakawa have narrowly missed out on winning back-to-back Autobacs SUPER GT Series titles.

Jenson Button and Naoki Yamamoto finished just ahead of the no.1 Red Bull KeePer TOM’S Racing Lexus LC500 to claim the third at Twin Ring Motegi, and with it the championship.

Yamamoto earlier this year won the SUPER FORMULA title ahead of Cassidy and becomes only the fourth driver to win both ‘SUPER’ titles in a calendar year.

“That was a tough race,” Button said.

“They’re never easy and I think that’s what makes it extra special. This championship is one of the toughest in the world, and that’s coming from someone who’s raced in Formula 1 for many years.

“This guy, Naoki, deserves every accolade that he gets because he is unbelievably quick, aggressive, he’s got everything. I’m so happy for him to get the double this year that he thoroughly deserves. A big win for Naoki, twins, and a double.

“I really couldn’t be happier. This has been a long time coming for me and the last championship I won was nine years ago. That was quite a big one, and this, for me, feels just as big. This is so important.”
