Earl Bamber fifth in Qualifying Race marred by big shunt

Augusto Farfus cruised to victory in the FIA GT World Cup Qualifying Race, which was marred by an opening lap shunt.

Pole sitter Farfus had the inside line into turn two with Marciello, but there was drama almost immediately behind.

Bamber, Mortara and Vanthoor went three-wide on the run down to turn two. Bamber edged right and into the path of Mortara who in turn went into Vanthoor. The contact between Mortara and Vanthoor sent the Belgian across the track, into a spin, then into the Armco barrier at high speed.

The race was quickly brought under control of the safety car as Vanthoor’s car was recovered and the track swept.

Farfus led the field to the restart with Marciello and Engel behind. Mortara was fourth while Bamber maintained fifth.

Bamber went on the attack and looked to get past Mortara into turn three. The Porsche pilot couldn’t get by and had to hold station in fifth.

Out front and in clean air, Farfus immediately stepped out to a lead of a second. The AMG GT3 trio behind was led by Marciello, but he couldn’t catch Farfus.

Farfus and Marciello were unchallenged in first and second. Meanwhile, Engel, Mortara and Bamber battled for third.

A late race push by Bamber came to nothing as he finished fifth. Ultimately it was Farfus in the sole BMW M6 GT3 who won ahead of the Mercedes gaggle.
