Igor Fraga takes first blood at Manfeild

Igor Fraga has put a dent in Liam Lawson’s championship lead after the young Brazilian comfortably won the first race of the weekend at Manfeild: Circuit Chris Amon.

Fraga pounced off the line to take the lead, with Lawson in hot pursuit. Franco Colapinto and Spike Kohlbecker fell in behind the pair.

The race was red flagged early on after an incident between Henning Enqvist and Emilien Denner, continuing a torrid run of non-finishes for the young Frenchman, who was understandably dejected.

On the safety car restart, Fraga began to gradually pull away from Lawson, as Colapinto started to apply the pressure from behind.

New Zealand racing veteran Kenny Smith put in a good performance, pulling off an early pass on Rui Andrade. He would eventually finish the race in 17th.

Up the front however, Fraga maintained a comfortable cushion over the field, setting the fastest lap several times over the last few laps. The win means that Lawson’s lead in the championship has been trimmed to four points, with a total of 55 on offer for the remainder of the event.

Meanwhile, Red Bull junior Yuki Tsunoda is now mathematically out of contention for the championship after struggling for pace in both qualifying and the race.
