Jaxon Evans maintains rookie title lead in Carrera Cup Germany

Porsche Junior Driver Jaxon Evans has claimed 12th and 8th place finishes across two races in Porsche Carrera Cup Germany at Circuit Zandvoort.

A tough qualifying meant he started Race 1 and Race 2 from 16th and 11th respectively for Team Project 1 – JBR.

Porsche powerhouse BWT Lechner Racing were the team to beat with series veteran Michael Ammermüller the man on top. He claimed a lights-to-flag win in Race 1 ahead of Porsche Junior Julien Andlauer and Dylan Pereira for a Lechner Racing one-two-three.

Larry ten Voorde had been inside the top three at the finish but was handed a post-race time penalty for a jump start infringement and duly fell to fourth.

Leon Köhler, David Kolkmann, Tim Zimmermann, Rudy van Buren, Sandro Kaibach and Jannes Fittje completed the top 10. It was a strong run for Evans who climbed up to 12th in the order by the checkered flag.

“Sixteenth on the grid was, of course, not a great starting position,” Evans said. “I managed to improve a little but overtaking is tricky on this track.”

For Race 2 of the weekend Evans was well placed for a charge through to the top 10. However, that was stifled by an early red flag period when one car flipped.

The 17-lap race was shortened to just 11 laps and in that time Evans moved up to eighth overall.

“I managed to overtake two cars in the first lap, but unfortunately I couldn’t do anything more after that,” Evans said. “The two safety car phases made it impossible to make up more ground.”

At the front of the field Ammermüller took back-to-back wins for Lechner Racing, this time ahead of Jaap van Lagen by just half a second. Meanwhile, Pereira book-ended the podium for Lechner Racing, two and a half seconds off the leader. However, since only 11 of the 17 laps were contested, the drivers receive only half the points.

Igor Walilko and Jean-Baptiste Simmenaeur completed the top five running order while Julien Andlauer claimed sixth, Luca Rettenbacher seventh, Evans eighth, Berkay Besler ninth and David Kolkmann the last of the top 10 runners.

Main rookie title rival Leon Köhler was disqualified from Race 2, which means Evans takes his lead to 153 points over Köhler on 142. Berkay Besler holds third on 123 points.

Overall the championship is led by Andlauer (143.5), Ammermüller (138) and ten Voorde (134). Evans holds seventh overall in the standings with 73.5 points.
