After a tough time at Highlands Motorsport Park, Jaylyn Robotham has got his Toyota 86 Championship challenge back on track at Teretonga Park.
Having qualified on pole position, Robotham got a slow getaway from the top spot. Second place starter Campbell Stewart was a fast starter to edge ahead of the Australian ace. However, on the gear change, Robotham got back ahead to lead the race.
Robotham sustained pressure early on from Stewart, but having been on the attack, Stewart had to go on the defence. Third place starter Peter Vodanovich managed to make his way through with a pass out of the final corner.
Robotham was resilient on defence with Vodaonich second and Stewart third. Championship challenger Jaden Ransley lay fourth and Connor Adam fifth. Richard Peasey, Justin Allen and Brock Gilchrist were also in tow, but unable to make any headway.
A mistake at the penultimate corner allowed Vodanovich to sneak down the inside into the final corner, but the switchback from Robotham meant he could come back and get the lead straight back.
Ultimately, Robotham couldn’t be passed in what was a tight affair for the race win. Vodanovich claimed second with Stewart third for his maiden Toyota 86 Championship podium.
Ransley, Adam, Peasey, Ryan Wood, Brayden Phillips, Brock Gilchrist and James Wilkins completed the top 10.
Race 2 of the championship gets underway at 10:50 am with Race 3 at 2:55 pm local time.
