NASCAR driver Ryan Newman has been transported to the Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach after a suffering a horrific crash on the last lap of the Daytona 500 earlier today.
After two overtime extensions that extended the race distance beyond the set 500 miles, Newman found himself in the lead coming out of the final corner and onto the final stretch.
However, after tangling with Ryan Blaney, Newman was sent into the wall heavily before being hit in the drivers-side window by Corey LaJoie, and was sent careening down the track on his roof, the fuel tank ruptured, and the car in flames. The fire was extinguished and paramedics rushed onto the scene to aid Newman.
Newman was extracted from the car and taken to the Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Florida.
At 10:05pm local time, NASCAR issued a statement on Newman’s condition.
The Daytona 500 was won by Denny Hamlin, with Ryan Blaney in second and Chris Buescher in third.
