Matt Griffin brings BMW M3 to BNT V8s grid for Class Three tilt

Matt Griffin is set to drive a Mortimer Motorsport prepared BMW M3 at this weekend’s BNT V8s season opener as part of Class Three.

Mortimer Motorsport will bring two of their cars to Pukekohe Park with Griffin in a BMW M3 E46 and Andre Mortimer in a BMW M3 E92.

It will be the first time Griffin has been back behind the seat after winning Class One in the ENEOS North Island Endurance Series One Hour series.

Speaking with, Griffin said the chance to compete on the support card to the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship is a dream come true.

“It’s going to be pretty bloody awesome, I can’t wait to mix it up with all the big names like Andre Heimgartner and race with Brad Lathrope and all those other guys I’ve never raced with,” he said.

“It’s a great opportunity because it’s televised in New Zealand and Australia, so there’ll be a lot of eyes looking at me, which is what I need to try and get my name out there and get noticed.

“Plus, I’m driving a fantastic looking car, which is another bonus. I’m buzzing at the moment!”

Typically the BNT V8s grid is made up of Ford, Holden, Toyota and the sole Nissan across Class One and Class Two. However, Class Three will see three BMW M3s take the grid with Andrew Nugent joining the two Mortimer cars.

Griffin said he thinks it will mix things up a bit, and he thinks he can match if not go quicker than the Class Two cars.

“It’s going to throw a cat amongst the pigeons. We’ll see what happens.

“I’ve got the pace and speed to keep up with them if not challenge them. I’m looking forward to giving them a run for their money.”

For Griffin this will be his first step towards achieving the goal of a full time drive in the BNT V8s. he said he’s hoping a strong performance might catch the attention of some car owners looking for a driver.

“That is the ultimate goal is to try and progress forward and get another drive and see where that takes us.”
