WATCH: Hartley taken out in scary lap one crash

Brendon Hartley’s hopes of a points finish at the Canadian Grand Prix were dashed just five corners into the 70-lap race.

On the fringe of the top 10, Hartley looked to get around hometown hero Lance Stroll and make his way up the order.

Watch the incident below:

Hartley went to the outside of Stroll coming into turn five, but the Canadian driver got loose and slammed into the side of the Scuderia Toro Rosso-Honda driver. The contact sent Hartley up the outside wall and onto his side—skating out of control.

Both Hartley and Stroll suffered extensive damage and duly slid off into the run off, fortunate not to collect anyone on the way through. The pair were battling for 13th and 14th at the time—Hartley had started from 12th alongside Kevin Magnussen.

The safety car was brought out straight away to allow for a full recovery and to remove the extensive debris strewn across the circuit.

A clearly disappointed Hartley shook his head as he sat idle in his STR13. Both were forced to retire from the race. An investigation has been launched into the incident.

Hartley was sent to hospital for a precautionary scan.
