Cassidy sixth in Spielberg race one, Ilott on top after huge crash

Kiwi Prema Powerteam pilot Nick Cassidy has finished sixth in the first race of the FIA European Formula 3 championship event at Spielberg, in Austria.

Having started the race from 10th, Cassidy soon worked his way up to fifth, where he stayed for a large portion of the race.

It was only late in the race when the former Toyota Racing Series champion was forced to surrender the spot to a rapid George Russell, thus dropping himself to sixth where he would eventually finish.

At the front, Callum Ilott was able to convert his pole position into victory. He led home Prema pilots Lance Stroll and Maximilian Gunther, while Mikkel Jensen and Russell completed the top five.

The race was marred by a large late-race crash between Ryan Tveter, Pedro Piquet, and Zhi Cong Li — the latter vaulting several metres into the air after colliding with the stationary Tveter. All three drivers have been checked over, with Cong Li confirmed as 'awake and alert' by category officials.

Cassidy will have a lot of work to do in race two, starting outside of the top 10 in 12th place.
