Tom Blomqvist seals 1-2 finish for BMW Motorsport at Spielberg

BMW Motorsport's Tom Blomqvist has claimed a tight second-place finish at round two of the DTM championship at Spielberg overnight, pipped to victory by teammate Marco Wittman.

Wittman and Blomqvist started the race first and second respectively — the Kiwi a mere 0.019-seconds behind his teammate's pole-winning time.

Wittman won the race to turn one at the start, able to fend off the Kiwi's advances. The result of the start set the tone for the race, as the pair remained tacked together for its majority; rarely separated by more than half a second for the entire race.

The only other driver who looked like they could threaten the BMW whitewash was Audi's Edoardo Mortara. The Italian was similarly close to threatening Blomqvist for his position on the podium.

But in the end, the top-three order stayed static; Wittman first, with Blomqvist just 0.726 behind in second.

Mortara, Timo Glock, and Martin Tomczyk rounded out the top five; four BMWs finishing in the top five, and seven finishing in the top 10.

The result sees Blomqvist take over sixth place in the DTM championship standings, 17 points behind series leader and former Formula 1 pilot Paul di Resta.
