Jack Smith untouchable in first BNT V8s race

Supercars Championship hopeful Jack Smith has begun the new year with a lights-to-flag win in the BNT V8s at Highlands Motorsport Park.

Smith took the hole shot into the bus stop chicane while Ross, Hughes, Herbert and Grove bee lined their way through.

Smith immediately established a few car lengths lead over Ross, who was fighting hard to keep the battle pack behind him.

There was drama on lap two when Grove sent Hughes into a spin at the turn eight sweeper. The incident slowed Herbert, who got passed by Brad Lathrope fourth.

While Smith was streaks ahead of the field, Ross was left to fend Grove for second. With a handful of laps to go, Grove took to the inside of Ross at the cambered Turn 10 left hander. Grove went from Ross’ inside to the outside and managed to sweep around him to take second.

Lathrope’s fighting effort to hold onto fourth ahead of Herbert came to an end when the ITM-backed driver got off line trying to pass a lapped car. He got loose and that opened the door to let Herbert by.

Ultimately, Smith couldn’t be caught. Grove cut down his lead to 13 seconds by the race end. Matt Podjursky won Class 2.
