Blomqvist slogs to 16th overnight as championship leaders crash

BMW Motorsport's Tom Blomqvist finished 16th overnight at the DTM series' opening race at the Norisring in Nuremburg.

After struggling in qualifying, the Kiwi started the race down in 20th. He was able to chip away throughout the race to record a quiet 16th-place finish, while Audi's Edoardo Mortara took victory — becoming the first driver in the field to win multiple races in 2016.

The race was punctuated by a three-way incident between Christian Vietoris, and championship leaders Mattias Eckstrom and Robert Wickens. The crash happened at the Norisring's infamous turn-one hairpin, after an ambitious move from Eckstrom. Both he and Wickens failed to finish, while Vietoris continued on to finish 10th.

Mortara's eventual win was claime by just half a second over fellow Audi pilot Jamie Green. Paul di Resta, Marco Wittman, and Bruno Spengler rounded out the top five drivers.
