Dixon second in practice as Alonso and Rosenqvist crash

Practice 2 ahead of the 103rd Indianapolis 500 was marred by two big crashes for two early race favourites.

McLaren Racing driver Fernando Alonso crashed hard, slapping the outside wall then spinning towards the inside of the circuit, backwards into the SAFER Barrier and up the track before hitting the outside wall again.

“It was just pure understeer on the car,” Alonso said after the incident.

“Even if I lifted the throttle on the entry to the corner it was not enough. I lost completely the front aero there. The wall came too close and too quickly.

"Unfortunately, it happened today and we will lose a little bit of running time again. I’m sorry for the team. We’ll learn and come back stronger tomorrow.”

Alonso ended the day down in 29th with 46 laps completed of the course.

Chip Ganassi Racing driver Felix Rosenqvist also crashed out of Turn 2, hit the wall, and came back across the track into the inside tyre barrier. He trailing pack of cars were lucky not to hit Rosenqvist as he came across the nose of Will Power and Jack Harvey.

“Luckily my team builds a good car, a really safe car,” Rosenqvist said.

“I’m good. I was behind Colton trying to run the car in traffic and I felt a sudden push and then it went very loose, very fast and I couldn’t react to it. I’m completely fine. We just have to really analyze what happened there.

“I’m not sure if I was down on the curb. It kind of looks like I could have been up a bit. That probably explains it. I cannot really remember. A shame, but that’s how it is.”

The day was led by Team Penske again with Josef Newgarden topping the time sheets with a 39.326 around the course (228.856 mph).

Second was Chip Ganassi Racing driver Scott Dixon, just 0.0036 behind Newgarden in the running order. Spencer Pigot maintained his day one form with the third quickest time while Santino Ferucci was fourth and fastest rookie.

Helio Castroneves was fifth quickest on his Indianapolis 500 return. Sebastien Bourdais was sixth, Zach Veach seventh, Charlie Kimball eighth, Ed Jones ninth, an Ed Carpenter in tenth.

Despite being down in 34th overall, Alexander Rossi was the quickest of the ‘no tow’ drivers who opted not to run with a draft.

Practice 3 continues on Friday morning New Zealand Standard Time.
