Ford Mustang trio lead drama-filled co-driver practice

A last gasp lap by James Moffat has taken Tickford Racing to the top of the pile in the dedicated co-driver practice session.

“I suppose pretty boring on Thursday is good around here,” Moffat said.

“We had our plan like everybody up and down pit lane would have. We stuck to it and it was nice.

“To be quick at the end, it seemed like we were reasonably competitive most of the session. We were pretty much in race trim so that’s pretty encouraging for Sunday.

“Chaz and I, as a combination, have a fair bit of experience together. Hopefully, we can use that to good use over the weekend.”

WATCH: Luke Youlden suffers big shunt in co-driver practice

Practice 2 at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 was marred by two big incidents. The first came 20 minutes into the session when Penrite Racing driver Luke Youlden crashed at Sulman Park. The Holden Commodore ZB suffered significant structural damage and may not return for Practice 3.

Todd Hazelwood’s teammate Jack Smith also fell victim to The Mountain. He hit the tyre wall at Griffins Bend. Fortunately, the Matt Stone Racing car only suffered some minor cosmetic damage.

Jake Kostecki crashed in the final minute of the session in similar circumstances to that of Youlden. The collision with the wall at Sulman Park damaged the suspension, front and rear, on the right-hand side of their wild-card Holden Commodore ZB.

At the end of the 60-minute session, Moffat was on top of the timesheets with a 2:05.6619. He led the Shell V-Power Racing duo of Alex Premat and Tony D’Alberto, but not my much. They sat 0.0266 and 0.0529 adrift of the top time.

Garth Tander was the leading Red Bull Holden Racing Team entry in fourth. He too wasn’t far off the pace with a time 0.0581 behind Moffat. Young gun Will Brown was the best of the relative newcomers. In what is only his second Bathurst 1000, he lay four tenths behind the lead.

Bryce Fullwood, Michael Caruso, Craig Lowndes, Dale Wood and Alex Davison completed the top 10.

Practice 3 gets underway at 6:00 pm NZST.
