James Moffat joins Pither, Vernon in GRM TCR line-up

Garry Rogers Motorsport has added James Moffat to their TCR Australia Series program.

Moffat will race one of the Renault Mégane RS TCR cars alongside fellow countryman Jimmy Vernon and Kiwi racing driver Chris Pither.

Moffat and Pither will race the Renault platform while Vernon will compete in an Alfa Romeo Giulietta.

It takes the confirmed drivers for the first round to seven. It is hoped that 15 cars will make the grid for the first round at Sydney Motorsport Park over 17-19 May.

Moffat was a full-time competitor in the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship between 2011 and 2017. During that time he took one win for the then factory-backed Nissan Motorsport outfit (now Kelly Racing) and then joined Tickford Racing as a PIRTEK Enduro Cup driver where he won alongside Chaz Mostert at the Gold Coast 600.

Moffat was one of the drivers present for the pre-season shakedown and media day that took place at Sydney Motorsport Park.

“The TCR Series has been something I’ve been keeping a close eye on and I’m really pleased to have got the deal across the line to race the Renault with Garry Rogers Motorsport,” Moffat said.

“I was involved in the TCR launch at Sydney. I had the chance to sample one of the cars on that day and was impressed by what I saw and what I felt.

“It’s a category that is clearly growing world wide and I’m confident that it has some great potential in our local market.”

Moffat said he’s looking forward to being part of the championship, which will feature the likes of Supercars specialists Tony D’Alberto, Jason Bright as well as sports car regulars John Martin and Nathan Morcom.

“Naturally, it’s exciting to be involved in the first season of the new series, and to be driving one the of Renaults is going to be good fun.

“It’s great to be reunited with the guys and girls at GRM as well. Having driven full time in 2016 and 2017, I know them really well, there’s lots of familiar faces so it will be pretty easy to slot back in and get on with things.

“In terms of results, I’m keeping an open mind, but working with a team that has plenty of experience should play into our hands.

“We’ll all be learning on the run, but I’ve got a good experienced team-mate in Chris (Pither), so between the two of us and the team, we should be competitive and fighting at the front of the field.”
