McLaughlin edges Whincup by 0.001s in final practice

Scott McLaughlin and Jamie Whincup were almost inseparable in Practice 4 at the Penrite Oil Sandown 500, the pair split by a mere 0.0017s.

With a 1:07.5425, the Shell V-Power Racing driver reset the Practice/Qualifying lap record set a day earlier by Penrite Racing driver David Reynolds.

“The car is feeling really good, it’s been good straight out of the truck and that’s all we can really ask for a new car,” McLaughlin said.

“It’s been a tough few weeks, for these guys so I just want to reward them in Qualifying.”

Whincup wasn’t far away though on a 1:07.5442 in the front-running Red Bull Holden Racing Team entry. However, he was surrounded by the Ford Mustang fleet who found their footing late in the piece.

Cameron Waters (Tickford Racing), Lee Holdsworth (Tickford Racing) and Fabian Coulthard (Shell V-Power Racing) found pace to be third, fourth and fifth fastest.

Andre Heimgartner was impressive too as the third best New Zealander and the fastest of the Kelly Racing-run Nissan Altimas. He ended up just two tenths off the pace.

David Reynolds (Penrite Racing), Will Davison (Tickford Racing), Chaz Mostert (Tickford Racing) and Mark Winterbottom (IRWIN Racing) completed the top 10. Having been up in second place on Friday, Anton de Pasquale was 11th fastest for Penrite Racing.

The final practice session prior to Qualifying saw plenty of off-road excursions for many of the key contenders. Fabian Coulthard and James Courtney were early victims.

The front-runners weren’t immune with the likes of Waters, McLaughlin and Shane van Gisbergen also sliding wide. While Whincup was quick, van Gisbergen suffered and was bogged down in 18th overall.

Qualifying for Race 28 of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship gets underway at 2:25 pm NZST before the first sprint race at 4:25 pm. The day concludes at 7:20 pm to set the grid for the Sandown 500.
