Holden car lovers and owners are set to make a world record beating pilgrimage to this year’s Bend 500 enduro.
The event plays tribute to the Australian car brand with a special car show and cruise at this year’s opening endurance round.
The cruise is inspired by the ‘Holden Dream Cruise’ held in Elizabeth, the spiritual home of Holden in South Australia, which witnessed 1200 cars parade to the venue in honour of the end of local manufacturing in 2017. The event itself was a record for Holden turnouts and organisers from the Bend are hopeful to see that tally eclipsed come September.
Holden has been a part of Australian automotive culture since beginning operations 164 years ago when J.A. Holden & Co opened their South Australian saddlery business in 1856.
The first car produced by General Motors bearing the Holden name was the 48-215, a mid-sized sedan manufactured between November 1948–September.
The plan is to have a record number of Holdens parade in convey to the Bend Motorsport Park as a final tribute for the iconic Australian car maker.
The event will involve show-and-shine shows, conveys and the potential for parade laps around the race venue itself during the Bend 500 weekend.
“Holden rightfully occupies a very special place in South Australia’s heritage; we want to celebrate the brand’s significant history in the state by bringing owners together at OTR The Bend 500 this September,”said The Bend’s Managing Director, Sam Shahin.
“We are passionate about South Australian motoring and Australian motorsport. We want to celebrate the end of an era by bringing passionate Holden owners together and quite literally fly the flag for Holden in the brand’s home state.
“I am confident that the wider Australian public, whether devout Holden fans or not, would want to be part of this tribute.”
Ford car owners are also asked to come along to the marquee event. Ford lovers are encouraged to participate in a ‘Blue Oval Guard of Honour’ in a bid farewell to their greatest rivals.
“Like any sport rivalry there’s a healthy respect for the opposition, so we’re encouraging Ford fans to get involved and honour their ultimate competitor.
“The battle between these brands has delivered so many special motorsport moments over the years.”
