Todd Prujean prevails over Christina Orr-West in thriller

Todd Prujean has fought off opposition from Christina Orr-West and Murray Brook to win the SsangYong Racing Series opener at Manfeild Circuit Chris Amon.


Pole sitter Prujean took the hole shot into Turn 1 with Christina Orr-West alongside. Mark Mallard got a good start from the third row and went three-wide into the first turn. He settled into fifth just behind third and fourth placed drivers Kirk Stoneman and Brook.


Orr-West got a good run out of Higgins and into the final corner on the opening lap. She pressured Prujean for the lead but the youngster held station.


Prujean and Orr-West established a gap to Brook, Stoneman and Mallard. Lap after lap Prujean put his ute to the inside of the front straight and into Turn 1, defending his line.


Orr-West finally got a good run out of Turn 1 and went side-by-side with Prujean. Still, she couldn’t get by and had to stay in second. Their battle for the lead brought Brook onto the back of the pair with a lap to go.


Orr-West stuck here bonnet under the tray of Prujean’s ute and tried to utilise whatever slip stream was on offer. A good run out of the final corner allowed her to get alongside, but ultimately she could get by. Just 0.158 split the duo, Brook seven tenths back of the lead in third.


The fight for fourth saw Stoneman narrowly hold on to the position alongside Morgan Foster who charged up to fifth. Mallard eventually fell to sixth with James Watson seventh. Alexander Sherie was eighth, Chris Quinlan ninth and Lance Northcott tenth. Frouth to eighth was covered by less than a second.


Race 2 at Manfeild Circuit Chris Amon gets underway at 5:20pm.
