Kia Cee’d TCR coming to New Zealand

The Kia Cee’D TCR is set to race across Australia and New Zealand next year courtesy of a new deal with Choice Performance Ltd.

Also known as Team Ralliart, the Pukekohe-based outfit have been behind several successful campaigns in the Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship.

They’ve been appointed as the official agent for STARD (Stohl Advanced Research and Development) who build the cars in Vienna, Austria.

The deal comes courtesy of an existing relationship with dealer Andrew Simms, who will be able to supply parts, technical support and marketing opportunities via Kia New Zealand.

Two Kia Cee’d TCR cars are on their way to New Zealand and are expected to debut at the opening round of the TCR New Zealand Series next year.

Choice Performance is “in discussions with a number of potential drivers in Australia and New Zealand” but are taking registrations of interest from drivers.

“Having recently returned from visiting Manfred and his team in Vienna I am exceptionally excited for this opportunity,” Chris Little of Choice Performance said.

“The development of the Kia Cee’d TCR is world-class and a real credit to STARD. We are confident of achieving strong results in the New Zealand and Australian championship with the Kia Cee’d TCR and look forward to fostering our strong relationship with STARD who are exceptionally customer friendly.”

The Kia Cee’D TCR first went into production in 2017 and is powered by the Hyundai Theta-II turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder.

Like all TCR homologated cars, the Cee’d makes 350 hp (260 kW) and can either run an Xtrac & 3MO six-speed sequential gearbox.

The car runs MoTeC and has optimised suspension kinematics with McPherson up front and Multi Link in the rear.

The top of the line Kia Cee’D TCR with an Xtrac gearbox costs $220,000 NZD ex GST. Spares packages can be tailor-made but can cost upwards of $70,000 NZD.

Matthew Wales of Andrew Simms Kia and Auckland Central Kia said: “Kia Motors New Zealand are encouraged with the appointment of Choice Performance as the New Zealand and Australian Kia TCR agents.

“We are excited to see the results Choice Performance and STARD can achieve with the Kia Cee’d TCR. There is potential to create marketing opportunities for the Kia brand and increase the brand’s exposure to existing and potential customers.”
