Shane Van Gisbergen has finished fastest in the second practice session at the 2020 Superloop Adelaide 500.

The 30-minute session was littered by two red flag delays, hindering the busy session as all teams prepare for Armour All Qualifying tomorrow.

Will Davison found drama as the ten-minute mark approached.

The Milwaukee Racing Mustang beached himself in the sand trap at turn 11, locking the fronts and failing to pull himself up for the tight left-hander.

The red flag was consequently waved while Davison was recovered. Though the #23 Mustang recovered nicely to finish 0.08s off the lead in second place at the chequered flag.

Red Bull Holden Racing’s Jamie Whincup was the session’s early pacesetter, lying down a 1.20.210 on only his third lap to sit over three-tenths over his nearest rival.

The Triple Eight duo then further extended their lead as the session continued to get faster. Whincup improving to break the 80-second barrier with a 1.19.9514, Van Gisbergen one-tenth behind his teammate at the halfway point.

Supercars journeyman Chris Pither was then joined a growing list of drivers caught out by the narrow streets of the Adelaide circuit. The Team Sydney driver escaping his offtrack excursion without any dramas and would eventually finish the session down in 24th.

Mark Winterbottom flirted with Turn 8, touching the wall on the exit after getting loose on entry. Fortunately for the 2025 series champion, he avoided suffering any damage.

Scott Pye meanwhile had a different fairytale ending, finishing his session early when he collected the wall hard on the exit of turn seven.

The subsequent red flag once again came at a time when most drivers were on green tyres, thus limiting qualifying sims.

Yesterday’s pacesetter, David Reynolds, had a more calmed session. The Penrite Racing Commodore finishing in sixth, a mere two-tenths off the fastest lap.

However, it was Van Gisbergen who set an impressive 1.19.8079 on his final flying lap to cement himself at the top of the standings.

The day’s final practice session gets underway from 8.15 pm NZT which also doubles as a pre-cursor for qualifying with the ten fastest drivers skipping straight into Q2 tomorrow afternoon.
