Jamie Whincup won’t bow out from his illustrious career just yet as a decision has been made that should see Whincup continue to race for the Red Bull Holden Racing Team for one further season after 2020.
On Wednesday, both Triple Eight and Whincup said that an official statement concerning the future of the seven-time champion will be made on Saturday.
However, as first reported by speedcafe.com and then confirmed by a number of sources including supercars.com and motorsport.com have just revealed that Whincup is set to extend his current contract with Red Bull HRT after a deal was signed in secrecy last November.
The exact details of Whincup’s future within the sport will be made tomorrow at the Superloop Adelaide 500.
Should he continue past 2020, Whincup than influences decisions further down the grid.
Namely, Anton De Pasquale who was linked to replace a retired Whincup for next season. However, the future certainty of Scott McLaughlin remains murky.
The possibility of McLaughlin leaving permanently to race in the US for 2021 seems more likely than ever when Penske racing offered the defending champion a race drive at Indianapolis this May.
Expect official announcements from Red Bull HRT affirming Whincup’s contract renewal tomorrow.
