Wild diesel-powered BMW 150D set for endurance series

A bit of history will be made in the ENEOS North Island Endurance Series when Glen Chappel debuts his diesel newly acquired BMW E87 150D.


Built by Saxon Motorsport in England, the purpose-built race car is one of three in the world. Chappel bought the car, which arrived in New Zealand not long ago.


Once on track it’ll be the first diesel car in the history of the endurance series to race.




The BMW 150D is fitted with a 3.0-litre BMW N57S making 330kW (440hp) and 800Nm of torque. The N57S is usually tri-turbo, but the car was converted to twin-turbo.


It comes with pedigree too having won its class in the Nürburgring 24 Hours, Barcelona 24 Hours, Slovakia 24 Hours as well as four and six-hour races in the VLN.


Speaking with, Chappel said he bought the car “just because I thought it would be funny” to beat the petrol-powered cars.




“My daily driver is a 335 diesel that I’ve hotted up, so I’ve always had an interest in high-performance diesels.


“When the car came up for sale I thought it’d be quite funny to roar around the track with a diesel and beat all the petrol cars. It’s certainly not going to win races but it can certainly win its class.


“I started it up yesterday and you definitely know its a diesel. But it’s built for the Nürburgring and you’re not allowed any smoke so it is tuned well.”




The car is fairly well kitted out too. The carbon clad exterior features a Flossmann body kit and side exit exhausts. All up the car weights only 1.3 tonne dry. It comes with traction control, pneumatic paddle shift gear coupled to a six-speed gearbox, and a whole host of other bits and pieces (listed at the bottom of this story).


The car’s suspension was all fabricated in house at Saxon Motorsport and features KW three-way adjustable dampers all round.


The plan at this stage is to contest the One Hour Series in Class 1, but Chappel has his eyes on the Three Hour Series too. However, he’d like to see one-off six or 12-hour race take place where the car would thrive.




“We’re pushing for the North Island Endurance Series and the South Island Endurance Series to maybe do a six or a 12-hour in the next year. That’d be right up the alley of this car.”


The Three Hour Series might be an attractive prospect in future for them. When Chappel bought the car Saxon Motorsport told him that it can run nearly three hours at the Nürburgring before needing to pit for fuel.


Chappel will complete a shakedown of the car next week before the opening round of the series at Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park in Taupō at the end of the month.
