Mustang gets fresh coat in time for SIERDC opener

It screams and bangs and in 2020 the Collins Motorsport Ford Mustang GT-X will be doing all that again with an awe-gazing fresh livery scheme.

The team unveiled their all-new look today, showing off a blue-and-black stealth-looking paint job. Sky blue highlights break up the scheme with a drop in the orange donned on the car last year.

The new livery came as a result of public poll when the team uploaded renders of four livery designs. Two of which veered away from the blue design and sported a bold black-and-red paint job.

Asides from the livery, the Collins Motorsport Mustang will be running a brand new Roush Yates NASCAR engine complete with a new suspension and gearbox package ahead of its first major outing at the opening round of the Carters Tyres South Island Endurance Series at Teretonga.

The car is currently slated to enter the One Hour competition but team boss Paul Collins said he won’t shy away from contesting some of the Three-Hour races.

“The livery refresh came about from public feedback and support however the story is bigger than that,” Collins told Velocity News.

“We have put a brand new Roush Yates FR9 Nascar engine in it. Complete with new super shocks, suspension, gearbox and diff.

“Depending on reliability we will probably contest some of the three hour enduros when in the South Island. The one point we would like to make is this Mustang is 100% Ford.”

The Mustang has had a tumultuous inauguration to the endurnace racing scene over the last few seasons with consistent reliability proving to be a challenge. A faulty gearbox ruled the car out of a strong finish at the NZ Endurance grand finale from Hampton Downs last year with Kiwi V8 ace Paul Radisich at the wheel.

However, the team has spent the last summer contesting in the open class of the BNT V8s where it finished first in class at the final round from Manfeild having seemingly solved its reliability issues.

The first round of South Island Endurance Series will be on September 12 from Teretonga Park. Round two and three follows on October 3 at Mike Pero Motorsport Park and October 17 in Timaru.
