Lawson claims points, Armstrong caught out in collision

Our Kiwi Formula 2 signed off their Monaco debuts with mixed fortunes in the weekend finale this morning.

Liam Lawson bounced back from the news of losing his race two win to finish seventh after starting outside the top ten.

Monaco is a challenging circuit to overtake on, yet Lawson stayed composed and ran a robust strategy to secure a small bag of championship points.

However, being stripped of his win hours before for a technical infringement was a “tough one to swallow” for the young Kiwi.

“I have no words right now…winning in Monaco is something I dreamed of,” Lawson wrote on social media.

Lawson remains fifth in the championship on 38 points, two adrift of Dan Tikctum in fourth.

The 42-lap feature race was won by Theo Pourchaire, who followed up his masterful qualifying performance with a lights-to-flag win.

At 17-years-old, the Frenchman re-sets the record as the youngest winner in F2/GP2 history.

“I cried a bit on the radio,” Pourchaire said.

“For me it’s a dream come true to win at almost home, for sure it’s not France, but I just live half an hour from here.”

Marcus Armstrong’s Monaco weekend ended on a low note when he was taken out in a collision with Juri Vips.

Vips was dealt a five-second penalty for his role in the accident, while Armstrong retired for the second race in succession.

In a scoreless event for Armstrong he slips back to 15th in the driver’s standings.

The next round of the F2 championship will be on the Baku street circuit over June 5-6.
