Cassidy and Evans in shot of winning Formula E title this weekend

This weekend, no fewer than 18 drivers can mathematically win the Formula E world championship, including Kiwi duo Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy.

Evans sits eighth in the driver’s championship, with Cassidy one spot ahead of his compatriot.

For Cassidy, having a chance to snare the series crown in the final round is something he is proud to accomplish in his rookie season.

It took the Envision Virgin driver five races even to score a point. Now, he is only 19 points behind championship leader Nyck de Vries.

“I am really happy to go to Berlin with a chance to win the championship, especially in my rookie year, and have a genuine shot at the title,” Cassidy said.

“It is more than I anticipated and has exceeded my expectations.

“However, I am a racing driver and I want to win, so am still focussed on achieving the best results I can this weekend.”

Over the last three rounds, Cassidy has collected two podiums and a further top-five finish, which have bolstered his championship position.

“I think we’ve had great momentum in the last few rounds, so I’ll look to continue like that and build on it,” he said.

“If we can keep up the great teamwork we’ve had until now, maintain our focus, and execute the way we know we can, we’ll be in with a shot.

“Berlin is a challenging track, especially with the reversed layout. Qualifying will be important, but there are places to overtake, and we have a quick car and good pace both in qualifying and race, so bring it on.”

Evans lurks a sole point behind Cassidy in the battle to be the top New Zealander.

A podium in the last race at New York has solidified the Jaguar driver’s title ambitions after three consecutive DNFs.

“I’ve been with the team for five years now and am so proud of the position we find ourselves in heading to the final races of the year.

“Every single member of the team has put in long hours and dedication to get us to this point, and rounds 14 and 15 will be no different.

“The final race weekend of the season is always an important one – but so were the other 13 to get us here – as a team, we will approach the weekend with the same attitude.

“We know the Berlin Tempelhof circuit well and have done plenty of preparation and head to the weekend with a positive and optimistic mindset.”

There are two races over the weekend, the first of which begins at 0010 NZT, August 15.
