Evans and Cassidy fail to score points in Mexico City

Mitch Evans is left to rue ‘what if’ after a frustrating end to the Mexico City E-Prix Sunday morning NZT.

Neither he nor Nick Cassidy finished inside the top ten, meaning both Kiwis failed to add anything to their current points tally.

For Evans, everything was going swimmingly until the final two laps.

The Jaguar racer started the race in 11th. He should have qualified higher were it not for a lockup on his flying lap.

Even so, Evans was nestled nicely in the points-paying positions with less than a minute to run in the race. A P7 finish looked on the cards for a driver who desperately needs the points to mount a competitive championship challenge.

However, eventual race winner Pascal Wehrlein crossed the start/finish stripe with one second still on the clock in the 45-minute race.

That meant everyone had to do a surprise extra lap and thus conserve even more energy.

Ultimately, the additional lap was not factored in by several teams, and their drivers had already maximised most of their energy.

Evans was left to circulate the final lap with essentially nothing left in the battery, seeing him slump all the way down to 19th.

Cassidy was another loser in the outcome. The Envision Virgin driver was dipping in and out of the top ten for most of the race. However, he would fall back to 13th by the chequered flag.

As for those who finished at the pointy end, Wehrlein led home Porsche teammate Andre Lotterer in a 1-2 for the marque.

Lotterer was hot on his teammate’s tail on the run home. But he never looked in a position to make an overtake, later admitting Porsche instructed him to stay behind and secure a 1-2 finish.

Jean-Eric Vergne was third for D.S Techeetah.

There is now a lengthy pause in the Formula E calendar before the season resumes with the Rome E-Prix in early April.
