Motorsport Diary: Kiwis competing abroad this weekend

Wow. What a weekend we’ve got ahead!

While Formula 1 and Supercars will dominate headlines, there’s also a huge contingent of Kiwis competing around the world, including in IMSA, the Dunlop Series, Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe, Extreme E and the Porsche Carrera Cups in Asia, Australia and the United States.

This weekend also sees the beginning of the highly anticipated Supercars endurance season, bringing three more Kiwis into the field as co-drivers.

It’s one of those weekends where you won’t need to find much to do with so much action on track.

To see who is in action, how you can follow, and at what times, see below!

Liam Lawson: Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix

Liam Lawson returns to Formula 1 for his third Grand Prix, teaming up with Yuki Tsunoda at AlphaTauri for the Singapore Grand Prix. Daniel Ricciardo remains out injured following his crash at Zandvoort but will be in the paddock for engineering purposes.

    • Race: Sunday 3.35 pm

Six Kiwis will take part in this weekend’s Sandown 500 when the Supercars endurance rounds swing into action.

It’s hard to look past the all-Kiwi pairing of Shane van Gisbergen and Richie Stanaway as contenders for the event, but in Gen3’s first long run, anything is possible.

Andre Heimgartner and Dale Wood team up for Brad Jones Racing, while rookie Matt Payne has World Endurance Championship star Kevin Estre on hand. Estre finished third with Porsche Penske Motorsport in last weekend’s 6 Hours of Fuji.

Nick Percat has the services of Fabian Coulthard over the weekend, and Jack Smith is joined by New Zealand’s Jaxon Evans.

Tom Blomqvist: IMSA- Battle on the Bricks

Tom Blomqvist and Colin Braun team up for Meyer Shank Racing in the #60 Acura ARX-06 when IMSA ventures to Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the Battle on the Bricks.

An extremely tight battle in the Grand Touring Prototype class sees the duo sitting fifth in the standings but only 118 points off the lead.

Hedge currently leads the championship by 35 points following his sweep of all three races last round at The Bend. Third-placed Max Vidau is 139 points behind Walls.

Chris Pither also returns to action, as does Coulthard, who is running double duties as a co-driver in the Sandown 500.
