BMW will make a return to top-tier sportscar racing as the German powerhouse confirms its commitment to LMDh beginning in 2023.
The Le Mans Daytona Hypercar platform has attracted a range of manufacturers due to its low cost and the ability to race against the Le Mans Hypercars in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
BMW made the announcement via social media, where it posted a rendered image of their Le Mans-winning V12 LMR prototype with the caption “We Are Back. Daytona 2023.”
Surprisingly given their successful motorsport history, BMW has only won Le Mans once, back in 1999.
BMW then stepped back from prototype racing the following year as they focused on Formula 1.
However, they have since been a regular competitor in both the World Endurance Championship and IMSA championship in the GTE and GTLMs classes.
The news means BMW joins Porsche, Audi and Honda Acura as the manufacturers already firmed for the rollout of LMDh.
Toyota, Ferrari, Peugeot and Glickenhaus all have confirmed to run Le Mans Hypercar programmes.
