In a thrilling and hard-fought NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Sonoma Raceway, Connor Zilisch edged out Shane van Gisbergen in a race-long battle that went down to the final laps.
The two JR Motorsports teammates traded blows across all three stages, but it was Zilisch who withstood the relentless pressure to take the win by just four-tenths of a second.

Van Gisbergen started from pole under clear Californian skies, with Zilisch alongside him on the front row. The Kiwi ace jumped to the early lead, with Sam Mayer and Jesse Love in pursuit through the Esses.
On lap 3, Zilisch made an early move on Van Gisbergen into Turn 1, sliding by to take the lead. The rear of SVG’s car snapped loose, momentarily opening the door for Mayer as well, but the New Zealander managed to hang onto second.
By lap 6, Van Gisbergen struck back, reclaiming the lead as the pair began to gap the field, Mayer falling more than five seconds behind as the duelling teammates pushed each other to the limit.
Behind them, Jesse Love’s promising day came to an early end due to a mechanical failure, while Daniel Dye and Austin Green had early off-track excursions.
With three laps remaining in Stage 1, Van Gisbergen and Zilisch both dived into the pits under green. A slightly faster stop saw Zilisch emerge ahead of Van Gisbergen.
Mayer, who stayed out, inherited the lead and won Stage 1, with Brandon Jones, Carson Kvapil, Sammy Smith, and Sheldon Creed completing the top five.
Zilisch and Van Gisbergen resumed their battle at the front in Stage 2, once again going wheel to wheel through Turns 1 and 2. Van Gisbergen attempted a brave move under brakes at Turn 7, locking the rears but somehow saving the car. Zilisch remained in front, but the fight was far from over.
Lap after lap, the pair distanced themselves from the pack. By the halfway point of Stage 2, only Sawalich remained within sight, nearly six seconds back.
Van Gisbergen muscled his way past Zilisch at Turn 11, stealing the lead and giving a thumbs-up as he completed the pass. But Zilisch wasn’t done.
Nine laps later, with SVG complaining of zero rear grip, Zilisch roared back past and began to stretch a gap.
With Van Gisbergen in tyre conservation mode, the lead grew to nearly two seconds before the green-flag pit cycle began again. Both leaders came in with two laps remaining in the stage.

Jones took the Stage 2 win with Justin Allgaier second, Smith third, Creed fourth, and Kvapil in fifth.
Stage 3 began with Zilisch and Van Gisbergen once more on the front row. Adjustments were made on SVG’s car to preserve the rear tyres, but Zilisch once again had the edge on the restart.
After both went wide fighting for position, Sawalich capitalised briefly to move into second, only for Van Gisbergen to dive down the inside at Turn 7 and take the spot back.
Behind the leaders, chaos unfolded. Christian Eckes suffered front-end damage after a blown right-front tyre, and Ryan Sieg also picked up damage. But all eyes were on the front, as Van Gisbergen and Zilisch broke away yet again.
With 15 laps to go, Zilisch built a one-second buffer. Van Gisbergen was managing fuel but began reeling his teammate back in, the gap closing as they prepared for one final battle.
With seven laps to go, they were nose-to-tail. With three to go, Van Gisbergen started leaning on Zilisch, tapping the rear bumper, getting him slightly sideways. The Kiwi gave it everything, including a few elbows, but Zilisch held strong.
Despite multiple attempts and a couple of bumps exchanged through the final lap, Van Gisbergen couldn’t find the rear grip needed to complete the move. Zilisch kept his cool, fending off the charging Kiwi to cross the line just 0.4 seconds ahead after 79 laps of fierce competition and make it a 1-2 finish for JR Motorsports.
Sawalich finished a distant third, followed by Nick Sanchez and Riley Herbst rounding out the top five.
