Waikaraka Family Speedway has confirmed it will launch its 2025/26 season on November 29, slightly later than initially planned, as contractors put the finishing touches on a major redevelopment project.

The upgrade, part of an $11 million funding package, is transforming the Onehunga venue into a multi-purpose speedway capable of hosting not only its traditional stock car and saloon classes but also open-wheel racing, filling the void left by the closure of Western Springs Speedway.
In an update released on August 27, the Auckland Stock and Saloon Car Club (ASSCC) confirmed a number of critical works have been completed, including:
- Installation of new floodlighting, completed ahead of schedule.
- Installation of a new transformer, putting the site under high-voltage power.
- Construction of the Town Bend retaining wall.
- Cutting of the new track profile.
- Ongoing construction of a new 1.2-metre-high slipform track wall, featuring a rounded top edge and deflection foot for improved safety.
- Commencement of toilet block upgrades.
Contractors have even been working under lights to ensure the new track wall is ready in time. A Speedway New Zealand site inspection is scheduled for early November to certify the facility’s readiness.

While the slight delay means Waikaraka’s season will now begin with stock and saloon cars on November 29, open-wheel classes will make their debut at the venue in December.
Despite the later start, a full calendar of 24 race nights will go ahead for the 2025/26 season, with at least 10 events dedicated specifically to open-wheel racing. The commitment will continue beyond this year, with 10–12 open-wheel meetings planned for subsequent seasons.
The new calendar, agreed between ASSCC and PNSL, will be released soon. Officials note the opening night could still be brought forward by a week, depending on the completion of contract works.

The upgrades at Waikaraka come at a pivotal moment for Auckland motorsport. With Western Springs Speedway now closed amid ongoing legal disputes, Waikaraka has been tasked with stepping into the spotlight as the new home for open-wheel racing in the city.
Traditionally focused on stock cars and saloons, Waikaraka is now undergoing the most significant transformation in its history to accommodate the high-profile sprint cars, midgets, and other open-wheel categories that once made Western Springs famous.

The redevelopment not only ensures a modern, safer facility but also secures the future of premier speedway racing in Auckland, bringing together stock car diehards and open-wheel fans under one roof.
As the November 29 opening approaches, the countdown is officially on for a new era at Waikaraka Speedway.
