A late flyer from Will Davison pushed Tickford duo Cam Waters and Thomas Randle from the top spots in qualifying for this afternoon’s Townsville 500 opener on the Reid Park Street Circuit.

Davison’s 1:13.4114, coming in the 15-minute session’s closing stages, was just 0.0012s faster than Waters, with Randle a further 0.0039s behind in third.

Less than one-tenth separated the top five in qualifying, with Chaz Mostert in fourth and Anton de Pasquale in fifth, making for an all-Mustang top-five sweep.

Jack Le Brocq, who led after the first round of laps, was the first Camaro in sixth, 0.1037s behind Davison.

Andre Heimgartner is the first of five Kiwis in seventh, while Matt Payne qualified for the Top 10 Shootout in eighth, with Bryce Fullwood splitting the pair.

Championship contender Broc Feeney was the sole Red Bull Racing entry to qualify for this afternoon’s Shootout, going tenth fastest and scraping through just 0.0131s ahead of reigning champion Brodie Kostecki.

Championship lead Will Brown will start this afternoon’s 250 km race from 13th.

Kiwis Jaxon Evans (15th), Richie Stanaway (16th), and Ryan Wood (18th) also missed out on progressing to the Top 10 Shootout.

The final grid will be set from the Top 10 Shootout, beginning at 2.05 pm, with the race going green at 4.40 pm.
