Epic Finale: Thrilling battles and victorious champions close the NZ Porsche Race Series

The 2024/25 NZ Porsche Race Series has now concluded, and what a thrilling end to our highly competitive season!

Those who arrived at the track in the semi-dark wearing shorts this morning were having regrets about their wardrobe choice.

However, the chilly fog and peaceful Waikato atmosphere were soon warmed by the sound of 20 Porsches rolling out to start the first race of the high-profile Sunday event.

Race 1:

The start was another spectacular spectacle, and it was impossible to work out who was where quickly. Kelly McEwan had a stunner in his 2.7 Boxster and passed at least six cars within three corners. Steven Fang, however, was boxed in on turn one and lost multiple places from his prime start position in the 2.7 class.

At the front, Daniel Angus stormed around in first place, followed by Nic Cutfield and Oliver Saxton’s Cayman GT4.

When the chequered flag fell, it was Tim Robinson who won the 944 class ahead of Daniel Gross.

A delighted Chris Taylor won the 2.7 Boxster class, followed by Steven Fang, then Kelly McEwan. The 2.5 Boxster class was claimed by the speedy Ashton McCaughan, followed by yesterday’s winner, Cam McCormack and driver Jacob Bellamy.

Class Winners:

  • Class A: Daniel Angus
  • Class B: Nic Cutfield
  • Class C: Oliver Saxton
  • Class E: Tim Robinson
  • Class F: Chris Taylor
  • Class G: Ashton McCaughan
  • Class B Open: Steff Chambers

Race 2:

With the season’s final race about to start, there was a lot to play for. Apart from the A-class trophy Daniel Angus already had firmly in his grasp, everything else was going down to the wire. There were multiple contenders for three of the other classes.

As the lights went out, another intense first lap followed the usual crowded start. The cars were three and four wide until they stretched out and settled into the usual racing packs.

This was our 30-minute compulsory pit-stop race, and the stop times ranged from over 3 minutes to a few seconds, depending on the class. Daniel Angus, Nic Cutfield, and Oliver Saxton had the early advantage of being out front with relatively clean air and away from the intense jostling for position in the rest of the pack.

As the cars rolled through for their compulsory pit stops, it looked like we were going to have an incident-free race. Unfortunately, the TV cameras picked up the sight of Struan Robertson’s Boxster going straight through the sand trap at the end of turn one and making contact with the wall. That brought out the red flag, and the rest of the field was stopped and held stationary out on the track.

At the race restart, we all watched Daniel Angus, Oliver Saxton, and Steph Chambers forge their way back to the front of the field to take the first three places overall.

Season Winners:

  • Class A: Daniel Angus
  • Class B: Nic Cutfield
  • Class E: Tim Robinson
  • Class F: Steven Fang
  • Class G: Jacob Bellamy
  • MSNZ Championship Winner: Daniel Angus
  • Porsche Club Championship Winner: Steven Fang
  • Endurance Trophy Winner: Daniel Angus
  • The Steven Neville Boxster Champion Award: Steven Fang

Our warmest congratulations go to all our winning drivers and also to those who chased and pushed them so hard this season!
