Evans takes win, championship to come down to final race

Simon Evans has narrowed the championship margin to Rowan Shepherd with one more Toyota 86 race to play out, winning race two at Hampton Downs.

Shepherd, who finished second to Evans, holds a 40-point advantage over his rival. A total of 75 is up for grabs in the final race.

Initially, Brock Gilchrist looked to have won the Sunday morning affair. However, he was penalised five seconds for contact with Christina Orr-West.

Gilchrist is demoted to third, while Orr-West finished seventh following the skirmish.

Shepherd will be more than relieved to finish second and only lose a handful of points to Evans.

The defending series champion had to fight through the field from eighth on the grid. He is also feeling less than ideal. The guilty victim? A supposed dodgy meal on Saturday night.

Saturday’s race winner and Rookie of the Year champion Hugo Allan scored another solid haul of points with a P6 finish.

He will go head-to-head with Marco Giltrap in the fight for third in the points race.

Giltrap finished eighth in the race.

The championship-deciding finale gets underway at 2.15 pm.

Rain has been flirting in the area since the end of the morning’s race and the final is likely to be wet.
