F1 world pays tribute to Sir Frank Williams

Sir Frank Williams never let a challenge upset his ambition for success.

The inspirational founder of the Williams Formula 1 team experienced the utmost highs and the lowest of lows in life.

He watched his team dominate the sport in the 1980s and ‘90s, only to then deal with the heartbreaking loss of one of his drivers in his own car.

His life took a massive U-turn when he crashed while driving back to the airport from a test session in France in 1986.

Williams never walked again; daily life constrained by the limits of a wheelchair.

Not even that got in the way of Sir Frank.

“Williams is what kept him going,” his daughter Claire said. “His strength and resilience to come back from the accident and be as dominant as he was is a powerful message.”

Below is a small section of tributes from the F1 paddock to the legendary Sir Frank Williams.

It is with great sadness that on behalf of the Williams family, the team can confirm the death of Sir Frank Williams CBE, Founder and Former Team Principal of Williams Racing, at the age of 79.

Today, we say goodbye to the man who defined our team. Sir Frank was such a genuinely wonderful human being and I’ll always remember the laughs we shared.
