Feeney tops Bathurst opener qualifying, Wood stripped of top 10

Broc Feeney topped the opening Supercars qualifying session for 2024 at the Bathurst 500, heading home Red Bull teammate Will Brown by three-tenths to secure the final run for this afternoon’s Top 10 Shootout.

Ryan Wood impressed in his debut Supercars qualifying run, progressing in eighth and as the fastest Kiwi, but had his fastest lap time deleted for setting his fastest final sector while a yellow was being shown. That boosted Richie Stanaway into ninth, seven-hundredths ahead of Nick Percat.

Matt Payne ran into the sand on the final corner of his final lap and will start this evening’s race from 14th, ahead of Andre Heimgartner in 17th and Jaxon Evans in 24th.

Feeney, Brown, David Reynolds, Chaz Mostert, Todd Hazelwood, Anton De Pasquale, James Golding, Cameron Hill, Stanaway and Percat were the ten drivers to qualify, respectively.

Red Bull locked out the top two positions after the first round of laps, with Bown’s 2:06.4426 the early benchmark. Feeney would go on to better this on his next circuit to lead by three-tenths.

Ryan Wood put in a superb time to sit fourth at the 20-minute session’s mid-point as the fastest Mustang, while Payne sat eighth and Heimgartner eleventh.

Stanaway and Payne would improve on their times in the final ten minutes, with the former taking fourth and the latter sixth, whilst Wood was bumped to eighth.

Mostert jumped to second before Golding moved to fifth as a flurry of times came in over the final minutes.

Feeney broke the 2:06 barrier with a 2:05.9872 moments after Brown returned to second, and Reynolds moved to third, ahead of Mostert. De Pasquale also moved into the top ten.

Payne looked set to better his lap time at the chequered flag but locked up entering the final corner, stranding in the sand.

Localised yellows hurt several of the late runners, which worked in favour of Stanaway, whose last lap was invalidated. He survived in tenth.

Supercars return to the track for the Top 10 Shootout at 3.05 pm (NZ Time), with the season opener going green at 6.10 pm.
