Maserati MC20 GT2 brings Trident back to the track

Maserati is officially returning to the race circuit and has just revealed the car it will do it in, the MC20 GT2.

The new car picks up where the race winning MC12 forerunner left off over a decade ago and will take part in the GT2 European Series as part of the Italian brand’s strategy to bring the Trident back to the track.

Based on the MC20 road car, the GT2 inherits the 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged Nettuno V6 engine which has been taken to a “higher level” according to Maserati.

Wrapping around its carbon fibre monocoque is lightweight full composite bodywork which has grown various aerodynamic elements like a large front splitter, front canards, a rear diffuser and an adjustable rear wing. Each panel can be removed with ease thanks to their quick-release design.

You can also have it finished in a Maserati Corse painting and livery option called Blu Infinito.

Power steering is fully electric while all suspension components are now of a racing variety including adjustable shock absorbers and adjustable front and rear anti roll bars. A six-speed sequential racing gearbox has been fitted and is operated via the steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

Inside, there’s a 10-inch digital display for vehicle information that has been tailored to racing teams and gentlemen drivers alike who will operate the race car.

“The first few days are always quite unique, even more so for me when I was fortunate enough to bring Maserati to success at the GT1 World Championships, where I won four titles,” said Andrea Bertolini, Maserati test driver.

“We are now about to get back on track with yet another wonderful car. We’ve done lots of trial runs and early feedback is positive. Getting back behind the wheel of a GT was really exciting, and I could see everyone involved was very enthusiastic and motivated.”

The Maserati MC20 GT2 will make its official unveiling at the 24 Hours of Spa in Belgium at the end of June 2023.
