Motorsport Diary: Kiwis racing overseas this weekend

Alright everyone, it’s that time of the week again! Let’s see which Kiwis are flying our flag overseas over the next few days.

Compared to the last fortnight or so, this weekend is relatively quiet, with only two New Zealanders in action.

Firstly, we have Shane van Gisbergen back in the NASCAR Cup Series, racing at Martinsville Speedway. Additionally, Cormac Buchanan returns for Round 3 of his Rookie Moto3 campaign at Circuit of the Americas.

This might be a good opportunity to tackle the lawns and check off a few jobs from the list after the coverage, as things are only going to get busier in the coming weeks. With Formula One racing for the next three weekends and just two weeks until the 2025 Supercars round in Taupo, there’s a lot to look forward to. So saddle up and enjoy the action ahead.

Check out the broadcast times and further information below.

Shane van Gisbergen: NASCAR Cup Series

Shane van Gisbergen will be back behind the wheel in the NASCAR Cup Series, lining up for Round 7 of the 2025 season this weekend at Martinsville Speedway. Van Gisbergen has three prior starts at the 0.526-mile (0.847 km) paperclip-shaped track, competing twice in Xfinity and once in the Cup Series. In his Cup appearance last year at the penultimate round of the 2024 season, van Gisbergen achieved his best result on an oval, finishing 12th after starting from 29th on the grid. To this day, this remains his best oval result.

He’ll be hoping to bounce back this weekend after a challenging rookie campaign so far, which has yielded just one Top 20 finish at Circuit of the Americas, where he finished 6th. Several factors have contributed to his difficult start, and with some significant races on the horizon, I’m sure he’ll be eager to boost his confidence. Heading into this weekend, van Gisbergen sits 33rd in the standings with 20 races to go until the playoffs.

Cormac Buchanan: Moto3 World Championship

Cormac Buchanan returns this weekend for Round 3 of his Rookie Moto3 campaign, racing at Circuit of the Americas in Austin.

Buchanan has finished in the points in both of his starts so far in the series, despite having early setbacks in both races. The 17-year-old has shown great promise, consistently closing the gap to the leaders. He’ll once again have to learn the track on the fly, but after putting in some solid training back home since the last round, Buchanan is eager and ready for the challenges that lie ahead this weekend.
